It has been a minute and a half!
So much has happened.
I basically got laid off from a project.
Been bundled up, teeth chattering as one rounds the bend.
Was barely kept afloat with another project!
Had 1 project fall through.
Had 1 prospective project get delayed.
Got a couple of (extremely small) BMI residual checks!
Deeply contemplated this career and my continuation of it.
And all of those up and downs have led me to where I am now. Making noise for casino games, making more money than I ever have!
I’m working full-time as an audio designer.
It’s different. It’s great. It also leaves me time to work on projects on the side, which is extremely nice. But it also means my focus as a composer is going to change because the playing field is different.
I’m not.. scrambling
Still, if life has taught me anything, it’s to always have something in your backpocket.
So, what I want to do is check out my goals from last year, see how I faired over the past 2 years (because I’m WAY late) and then update those goals/make new ones if need be!
Business Goals (2022)
- Save up 10 months of rent going into 2024
LMAO. Failed.
- Get a music placement from a music library*
Completed! I have quite a few placements, actually!
- Apply to 1 music trailer a week (4 - 5 tune portfolio)
Failed. After losing my biggest client, I switched gears to something else entirely.
- raise my rates to match my new minimum. Renting is for the birds and I want a house.*
N/A? I did this in theory but never landed a gig that allowed me to test it out!
- Obtain 3 - 4 new projects that pay me at my new minimum (composing and arranging)
Completed! Caveat - these 3 new projects were with prior devs, but that’s not a problem in my book!
Now, with 2025, I’ve considered a few things but also understand that I have a full-time job. Still, that doesn’t mean I have to stop setting myself to high standards nor does it mean I need to disappear off the face of the Earth. Which has been my MO. So, I want my focuses to be indicative of that. Things that come to mind:
Get genuine compliments from my audio supervisor on ALL projects I score this year.
Finish and release Gecko Gods and Project 3 with the utmost quality.
Obtain one new project with raised rates ($700 is the minimum)
Finish my 3 personal projects (Sheet Music, Cuisine Odyssey OST and Music Packs)
Post to social media once a week.
I think these are the 5. We’ll see how I do. Here we go, 2025!
